Table R EX08 (Table Radiolaria Experiment 08) is the result of designer’s 8th experiment on natural form finding investigation. It was created by stretching a virtual fabric, where holes were placed on a stretched surface and the reaction by the material was observed and captured. This is the same way a plankton Radiolaria replicates and fortifies its structure – by continually creating a hole in its walls, it keeps the amount of materials to minimum and lightweight as well as structurally efficient and strong. The same effort was introduced in producing EX08, celebrating methods used by nature and replicating it. After the holes were formed on the virtual structure and design was set, an engineering programme by Altair was used to run structural test where the thickness of the design was optimized and fine-tuned for more efficient and stronger form. The form that initially resulted from computer simulation showed a structurally perfect form which lacked in beauty, something a programme was incapable to determine on its own. IL Hoon had to introduce varying thickness and conditions to the programme until both parties were satisfied with the final result – an optimized form that is structurally and aesthetically pleasing.
