Centre table, GRP, W70cm x L125cm x H47cm, 2007

Fabric Table was inspired by marine plankton called Radiolaria which recreates by creating a hole in itself continually to produce intricate mineral skeleton. The artist wanted to recreate this beautiful form and method which nature has adopted in a form of a table.

In order to do this, a fabric stretching design technique was invented to generate organic form. A single piece of fabric was stretched on a mould into a three-dimensional form, and holes were made on the stretched fabric and the shape allowed to form by itself. The resulting shape was sewn and later hardened by covering with GRP to capture the shape.

Just as in Radiolaria, the resulting shape was not pre-set but allowed to be generated into the final shape, replicating the building processes found in nature.
