Nodus

Limited edition of 12
Screen light, Carbon fibre, Fiber optic cable, LED, aluminium, W30cm x L100cm x H185cm, 2014

Inspired by the traditional Korean paper weaving method, “Ji Seung” (circa 13th century), Nodus which means “knots” in Latin is made of carbon fibre and fiber optic cables that have been hand woven into 10,000 knots, combining Korean traditional craft techniques with modern high-tech industrial materials. The surface of this unique piece is made of hand knotted carbon fibre, which is then interwoven in crisscross striped patterns with fiber optic cables chosen for their light emitting properties. This meticulous technique gives Nodus an irregular luminosity evoking an artistry akin to a hand sketch on a canvas.

Nodus is an extension of IL Hoon’s research and discovery of artisan craftsmanship that has lasted for centuries and can only be produced by hand. It also demonstrates alternate ways to utilize craftsmanship from the past and pays homage to those unknown skilled master craftsmen.
