Rami Bench New York

Bench, Carbon fiber, W37cm x L180cm x H45cm, 2013

Rami means “tree branch” in Latin and the inspiration for the series derived from the artist’s long-term study of lightweight and structurally optimized forms found in nature, such as bird skulls, bee hives and tree branches, that are formed and tested through evolutionary processes.

As part of the Rami series, the artist developed and utilized a string weaving design technique replicating the “form follows function” principle to generate the geometries of the design, hand weaving carbon fiber string into a three-dimensional form. The resulting shape was not pre-set but allowed to be generated into its final form through the numerous interactions between the strings. This was then set and hardened to capture the final shape.
